Main Article Content
Abstract
Electoral politics form the cornerstone of democratic governance, shaping the political landscape and influencing the trajectory of national development. In a diverse and vibrant democracy like India, elections not only determine the leadership but also reflect the collective aspirations and concerns of its citizens. As the largest democracy in the world, India’s political system is complex, with various layers of governance and a multitude of political parties vying for public support. The involvement of the youth, particularly those in higher education institutions, is critical in ensuring the dynamism and responsiveness of the democratic process. The youth represent a significant demographic segment with the potential to drive societal change and innovation. In India, students in higher education institutions are at a pivotal stage of their lives, transitioning from adolescence to adulthood. This period is marked by increased political awareness and the development of personal beliefs and values regarding governance and civic responsibility. However, the extent of their engagement with electoral politics—defined by their knowledge of political processes, their attitudes towards political institutions, and their actual voting practices—varies considerably.
