Disabled Women and Family Support: A Sociological Study Of Lucknow District

Abstract
Indian society had strong joint family system for basic fulfillment of all needs. Family was important for upbringing, care, socialization and motivation for all members, but there were stigma and ill feelings associated with disabilities. Even at present society the life of disabled women has several challenges regarding her existence. Caste, economic status, mindset, awareness about special needs, societal infrastructure and environment are important factors to decide the fate of victim disabled females’ life, their inclusion and empowerment in society.
Methodology: This paper is based on objectives regarding socio- economical background of family, behavior of family towards disabled female member, condition of disabled women in family, and how their families support them. The study is qualitative in nature, and descriptive/exploratory research design is used. 20-50 years disabled women families were taken by use of purposive and snowball sampling. Non participatory observation, case study and interview technique used with open ended question because each form of disability has its own consequences.
Conclusion: As major finding it can be stated about disability that no families welcome disabled females even today. Economic status, sensitization, awareness plays a functional role in family.
